Edo Era Silk Kasuri Kimono for a Merchant's Child

$600.00

This is a luxurious Edo era silk kasuri child's kimono from the Shonai region of Japan that was used by the child of a wealthy merchant family.

The sleeve and lower bodice show an arrow ikat or kasuri design. The purple (gromwell?) silk fabric is in a matsu pattern, which is a classic interpretation of pine, or in this case matsukawa bishi, pine bark.

With the kimono, indications of social status, personal identity and cultural sensitivity are expressed through color and decoration. Only the elite regularly wore luxurious kimono; the majority of people would only have worn silk garments on special occasions. This gorgeous kimono was most likely worn very carefully, stored away and expertly cared for to have survived for so many years. In excellent condition without repairs, tears, or stains.
